In the era where happiness is always the top priority of people, suitable friends and partners are one of the important features in individuals’ life. Some truths hold that children should listen to parents in choosing their relationships, while others claim that they should make the choices themselves. Although both views hold merit, I agree more with the latter perspective.
The idea that parents should make big contributions to their children’s friends and partners is justifiable. Parents are experienced people, they have undergone numerous occurrences, which means they might have the abilities to recognize toxic relationships in younger people. Hence, parents can give possible suggestions to their children, help them to avoid harmful friends and decrease the possibility of their children being betrayed by close relationships. However, life always changes, the personalities of people are increasingly unpredictable day by day, and parents can not read the feelings of other people every time. If parents prevent children from playing with their current friends just due to their thoughts and prejudices in the past, their children might lose their best friends and partners, which can also cause more difficulties for them in having new relationships in the future.
Therefore, with the development of society and generations, it is better for children to have their own opinions in choosing relationships. First and foremost, children are the people who directly contact their friends and partners, which means they can realize whether their relationships are going well or not by their feelings and intuitions, thus they can make the decisions more correctly than their parents. Furthermore, children making their choices themselves in relationships is a chance for them to become independent. For instance, failure in making friendships or betrayal can help children to find another relationship that is more suitable with them, and when children are in love with someone else, they will recognize that they need to take responsibility for their relationship and become more mature.
In conclusion, even though parents can help children a lot in choosing their friends and partners because of their experiences, I cling to the fact that children should make their decisions independently to have the most suitable relationships.
