Band 8+: Some people argue that parents should have a strong influence on their children's choice of friends and life partners. Others believe that young people should make these decisions independently. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In today’s world, we live in an era where young people are increasingly independent. Many believe that parents should allow their children to choose their friends on their own, while others think that parents have the right to intervene in their children’s choices regarding friendships and relationships.

On one hand, some argue that it is essential for young people to make their own significant life decisions, as doing so contributes to their personal development. For instance, they will encounter numerous challenging situations in life where they must discern right from wrong, even in choosing friends. A notable example can be found in romantic relationships; when seeking a partner, individuals may face various options, and it is crucial for them to make those decisions independently to avoid placing blame on their parents later on.

On the other hand, some contend that in order to cultivate healthy friendships or establish loving relationships, young people should seek guidance from their parents, who often possess more experience and knowledge. Parental insight can lead to more informed choices, thereby reducing the potential for conflicts and misunderstandings. For example, many teenagers might unknowingly gravitate toward friendships with those who struggle with addiction, which could adversely affect their own lives as well as their parents’. Additionally, parents, whether biological or adoptive, have the right to intervene in their children’s significant choices.

Critics may argue that this approach prevents young people from learning to live independently, as they would constantly rely on their parents’ opinions. However, by merely making their children aware of the potential consequences of unhealthy relationships and poor friendships, parents can help mitigate the negative impacts these associations may have.

In conclusion, while opinions vary on whether parents should influence their children’s friendships, I believe that parents ought to allow their children to engage with others independently. Young people face challenges and feelings of loneliness at times, so they need the opportunity to make their own decisions. If parents interfere too much in their children’s relationships, the children may ultimately hold their parents accountable for their choices.
