Band 8+: Some people believe that governments should regulate content on social media platforms to protect users from harmful information. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

People hold the belief that content regulation on social media platforms ought to be done by governments in order to shield users from harmful data. I strongly agree with this view because damaging information can cause a wide variety of problems to society

To begin with, social media can be easily accessible by people of all ages, including young children. In the modern age, most children are given digital devices at a young age, which allows them to get in touch with the online world and its content. This can lead to youngsters coming across inappropriate content posted by elders or people with bad intents. For instance, children may be exposed to violent videos or false information that negatively affects their growth journey. Without regulation, young users can be exposed to these contents. Therefore, the government has to ensure stricter rules in order to protect children from dangerous online content

Furthermore, the spread of fake information online can create serious consequences to society. Many people use social media as a source of information, but not all information is safe and trustworthy. As an illustration, fake news can mess up a person’s view on the mentioned topic. By coming up with strict rules, governments can require social media companies to be more cautious with the posted content, and remove harmful information more effectively

In conclusion, I firmly believe that governments should regulate content on social media platforms because it helps protect children from harmful information and prevents misinformation from affecting society negatively. Although some people may argue that strict regulations can undermine freedom of speech, protecting public safety should be the main priority.
