Nowadays, some people claim that all offenders should not be kept in jail so they can do community work for charities. From my perspective, I completely disagree with this view.
Admittedly, all criminals should serve a prison term to ensure the safety of other citizens. Notwithstanding they had had their normal lives, they decided to commit crimes and were subsequently thrown into jail. For instance, people who commit murder could continue to kill presidents if they were released from prison. Moreover, most criminals do not have the ability to think rationally, they can hurt citizens and think that they would be received freedom by doing unpaid work. The proof is that until now, no country has dared to risk letting prisoners work for free instead of imprisoning them .
On the other hand, some researchers witnessed that the rate of people who received prison sentences has risen recently. Therefore, it is too complicated to control if government provides all lawbreakers their duties outside the jail. We also have to concern about putting down a rebellion in case some offenders have intention of escaping. Besides, society has no lack of volunteers and allowing prisoners do charity work for them is unnecessary.
In a nutshell, prisons are not created for decoration but to punish and deter the proportion of criminals, they deserve to be suffered a penalty after breaking the law. Government should implement rehabilitation program and impose more severe punishments on offenders instead of giving them a chance to work without obtaining payment.
