People hold diverse viewpoints on whether students should be assigned homework or it is unnecessary in modern education. In my opinion, despite certain drawbacks, I firmly believe that homework plays a paramount role in students’ academic and personal development.
On the one hand, opponents of homework argue that excessive assignments may negatively affect students’ mental well-being. In the classroom, learners usually deal with relatively simple examples and grasp the concepts more easily; however, when faced with more complex exercises at home, they may struggle, feel inadequate, and consequently experience stress or anxiety. Such negative emotions are particularly detrimental for teenagers. In addition, an overload of homework may reduce the time available for extracurricular activities. Young people need opportunities to pursue hobbies such as sport, music, or painting, which broaden their horizons, enhance their worldview, and foster creativity. If students constantly devote their energy to preparing assignments, their motivation and enthusiasm for non-academic activities may decline.
On the other hand, supporters highlight that homework reinforces the learning process. Since classroom time is limited, many students fail to fully absorb all aspects of the lesson. Completing exercises at home enables them to review, identify gaps in their knowledge, and consolidate their understanding. As a result, preparing for exams becomes less stressful, because students only need to revise rather than start learning from scratch. Furthermore, it is homework that cultivates essential life skills. By completing tasks regularly, students develop a sense of responsibility, time management, and the ability to meet deadlines. These organizational and multitasking abilities are highly valuable, not only during their studies but also in their future careers.
In conclusion, although homework may sometimes limit students’ leisure time and contribute to mental strain, my perspective aligns with those who maintain that its benefits outweigh its drawbacks. Regular assignments not only strengthen academic knowledge but also instill vital skills that prepare learners for the challenges of adult life.
