While some people argue that watching TV has a negative impact on children, others believe that it has some positive impact when they grow up. In my opinion, while this pastime could have some negative influence on children, I believe that it can assist them in getting acquainted with basic human values and behavioural patterns.
Some people argue that watching TV has detrimental consequences for children. First, it harms their attention span, as they are constantly exposed to vibrant rapidly-changing images. This overstimulates their brain, which could lead to inability to concentrate in an academic environment. Moreover, watching TV hampers children’s development, as this activity is mainly passive and does not require active participation. As a result, it can take longer for children to develop critical thinking skills and succeed at school.
On the other hand, others believe that there are some advantages to watching TV. While watching various programmes, children can learn how to behave in different social situations. For example, there is a significant number of TV programmes and cartoons which have been designed particularly for children. By watching their favourite characters role-play various social situations, for example, at a cafe or a supermarket, children can learn generally accepted social rules and norms. Moreover, cartoons usually provide enlightening insights into fundamental human values, including kindness, respect, and forgiveness. Furthermore, watching TV helps them properly behave and interact with others when they grow up.
In conclusion, despite a number of disadvantages, watching TV has a positive effect on children. If children spend some time watching special programmes and cartoons, they can learn how to communicate and treat people properly.
