Since the industrial revolution, the introduction of satellite and cable TV has changed how children behave radically and made an everlasting impact on the younger population. Many contribute this effect to the content children getting exposed to, while others blames on the excessive amount of time children spend watching in front of the screen. In my opinion, both of them do contribute to the overall change in our youth’s mind nowadays
As a matter of fact, most of our children are impressionable. Therefore, it is likely for them to replicate or reproduce dangerous actions shown on TV. Consequently, they could harbor an unrealistic image of what is “acceptable” in this society. For example, by constantly exposed to beauty contests and shows, children are likely to develop a twisted perception of what is “beautiful” in this world. This could lead to body dysmorphia – a hatred towards one’s body, which could lead to serious mental health complications in their later stages in life.
Another point need to be discussed is that the amount of time spent on consuming content on TV is another major contributor in the shaping of young children’s minds. Do to the addictive aspect of television shows, many kids are spending hours upon hours staring at the screen. This could lead to both physical and mental health issues like obesity, eye strain, loss of vision, depression, and social anxiety which is due to long hours of staying indoors, lack of social contact with family and friends and insufficient amount of exercise and activity.
In conclusion, while each viewpoints has their own contribution to the overall negative change in the young population’s mind and thinking, it is a mix of both ideas that give us the total picture of what’s causing this massive shift in children’s behavior
