There has been ongoing debate among people whether schools should add teaching foreign languages to the curriculum of primary school students or not. Even though there are noticeable drawbacks, such as pressure all which can affect children’s mastery of their native language and lack of resources including unqualified teachers and available materials specifically in rural areas. However, they are outweighed by benefits like improving communication skills as well as making them dive into the culture of the language they are learning which makes them more open-minded.
One negative side of teaching foreign language is that it creates an obstacle to fully master the mother language of children. Young students tend to have difficulty learning and using their own language as their brain is not fully formed yet, not to mention the homework which is given to them regularly makes this process even more complex. Therefore adding a new language apart from their own might have a visible negative outcome for the future. A lack of resources is another disadvantage. Before teaching children a new language, schools have to make sure that educators themselves have a decent level of knowledge needed which is now a huge concern. Low-income schools struggle with finding professionals as most of them choose not to become teachers or prefer to work in private schools that offer better career perspectives and higher salary.
Despite these downsides, conveniences of foreign languages in primary school curriculum are far greater. One major benefit of adding a new language is that children will develop their communication skills. While learning two languages at the same time, pupils will be obligated to practise speaking more which will show the growth in their way of thinking and in the understanding of language as well. This chain of actions will lead them to speak more and will raise future debaters or public speakers. Further advantage is that by learning the language children will have to immerse in the culture of it. People whose awareness of other nations’ traditions and ways of life are considered to be less successful than people who have it, so by enlightening children with knowledge of other types of societies of the world we create a smarter and more versatile population.
In conclusion, there are few reasonable disadvantages of making children learn new foreign languages all which might lead to some negative consequences. However advantages of implementing new languages into school system outweigh all the possible drawbacks. Therefore, including a new tongue raises chances of having skilled and smarter generation.
