There has long been a debate on whether individuals should prioritize planning for the future or concentrate on the present. In mu view, the two perspectives are not contradictory, and striking a balance between them is crucial for a well-rounded and fulfilling life.
Centering upon real life, an action that involves everything from completing assigned tasks to coping with difficulties, tends to bring out the realistic side of people and foster their personal development. Instead of daydreaming about the misty veils of the future, people become more immersed in their work, making themselves hardworking, down-to-earth and successful. Many entrepreneurs, such as Steve Jobs, have achieved tremendous success through their everyday efforts, often starting companies from scratch. They are the living proof that action speaks louder than a thousand words. Additionally, it is common for people to develop critical thinking and independence, which could be beneficial to their future development.
However, an argument can be made about the positive effect planning for the future brings. Despite the uncertainty of the future, setting such solid goals ahead ensures a clear aim. By breaking a seemingly unachievable task into a dozen of minor parts, people become more motivated and task-orientated. In fact, thinking about the future doesn’t mean completely breaking off from the present. Better schemes can lead to easier success, rather than just working aimlessly, only to waste precious time and energy.
In conclusion, I think that equivalent importance should be attached to both focusing on the present and planning the future. Only through a combination of both can we promote long-term personal development.
