Many believe that contemporary times offer the best quality of life compared with any other period. In my opinion, living in the modern age provides undeniable advantages in healthcare and individual opportunity, making it arguably the best period to be alive. Nevertheless, travelling back to the European Renaissance would present a uniquely fascinating experience due to its extreme explosion of artistic and intellectual creativity.
One of the main reasons why the present is the best period to live is thanks to technological and scientific innovations; people’s living standards have reached an all-time high. With a wide range of medicine and successful test experiments, it is not only easier for people to cure numerous deadly diseases but also has increased average global life expectancy. Therefore, average global lifespan has more than doubled over the past century, allowing millions of people to lead healthier and significantly longer lives.
Another important advantage of this era is that advancements in technology and internet expansion have made information far more accessible globally. For instance, students in developing countries now have more opportunities to study abroad by applying for international scholarships via online platforms. While modern society faces real threats like climate change, today’s safety and information access make the present era outstanding compared to any past century.
If given the chance to experience another historical period, I would choose the Renaissance, which spanned roughly from the 14th to the 17th century in Europe. This era marked the rebirth of art, science, and cultural movement after the slow progress in the Middle Ages. As a result, a person living back then could watch society shift away from strict religious rules toward logical thinking and scientific discovery. In addition, watching the invention of Gutenberg’s printing press allowed new ideas to spread quickly across Europe, giving people a chance to reach the modern world.
To summarize, both modern times and the European Renaissance have unique benefits that are worth living. In my view, although the latter stands out as a remarkably transformative period of human creativity and cultural evolution, I believe that the expansion and innovation of the former remains the most advantageous time to live in. Modern advancements in medicine, human rights, and global technology make sure a standard of well-being that makes today the safest and most successful period in human history.
