Band 9: Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is that loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

A considerable number of individuals assert that the current extinction of specific species of flora and fauna is the predominant environmental issue of our era. Conversely, some argue that there are more pressing ecological dilemmas that warrant attention. Although both perspectives are valid to a degree, I tend to align more closely with the latter viewpoint, and this essay will elucidate my position.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations indicates that the economic significance of pollinators in relation to global agriculture surpasses $235 billion annually. It is estimated that approximately 35 percent of the world’s food crops rely on animal pollinators for successful reproduction, implying that one out of every three bites of food we consume is contingent upon these organisms. Consequently, substantial alterations in the populations of certain species can have far-reaching ramifications on the ecosystem. For instance, the sea star preys on mussels and sea urchins, which lack natural predators. Should sea stars become extinct, the populations of mussels and sea urchins could proliferate uncontrollably, ultimately leading to significant degradation of coral reefs, demonstrating the intricate balance within ecosystems.

Nevertheless, despite concerted efforts to conserve and propagate endangered species, their populations in the wild continue to decline alarmingly. This brings to light the pressing issue of pollution as a more critical problem that necessitates urgent attention. For example, acid rain, a byproduct of air pollution, significantly alters the chemical composition of soil and water, jeopardizing ecological balance. The lowering of pH levels in marine environments adversely impacts food sources for various organisms, potentially resulting in the extinction of multiple marine species. In terrestrial ecosystems, the compromised pH level of soil hinders vegetation’s ability to absorb essential water and nutrients, rendering plants weaker and vulnerable to mortality.

In conclusion, while some maintain that the extinction of specific plant and animal species is the foremost environmental challenge of our times, I strongly advocate for the recognition of other urgent issues, particularly various forms of pollution, which pose significant threats to our ecological systems.
