Environmental issues are closely intertwined with human survival. A healthy environment is essential for sustaining life over the long term. However, prevalent environmental problems have the potential to push humanity to the brink of extinction. While some individuals assert that the loss of specific species of plants and animals constitutes the primary environmental concern, others hold the view that there are more pressing environmental issues. In my opinion, I firmly advocate the stance that the depletion of specific species of plants and animals stands as the paramount environmental problem, for the following two reasons.
Firstly, certain plant species play a pivotal role in the sustenance of life on earth. Plants are the primary source of oxygen, a fundamental element for both humans and animals, while also absorbing the hazardous carbon dioxide. For instance, consistent degradation of plant life leads to a reduction in oxygen levels and an increase in carbon dioxide concentration, thereby trapping solar heat and elevating temperatures. Consequently, the rise in temperature contributes to the melting of Arctic ice and a subsequent increase in sea levels. This chain of events underscores the critical importance of preserving plant species, making their loss the preeminent environmental issue.
Moreover, every species of animal fulfills a distinctive role in maintaining the ecological food cycle. The absence of a specific animal within an ecosystem can have cascading effects on the environment. For instance, certain insects pose a threat to crops, and in the absence of their natural predators, such as birds or frogs, the insect population can proliferate, leading to a substantial increase in crop damage and consequently triggering food shortages on a global scale. Thus, the loss of specific animal species significantly disrupts the delicate balance of the environment, rendering it a pivotal environmental concern.
While it is contended by some that other environmental issues hold greater significance, a deeper examination underscores that all environmental predicaments stem from the aforementioned factors. Hence, it is evident that the loss of particular species of plants and animals constitutes the central environmental challenge.
