There is a notion that young people should be taught parenting skills in schools. I agree with this opinion. All parents will need certain parenting skills, as such skills will be highly beneficial to their family lives. Moreover, teachers are among the best choices for educating people, making the learning experience smoother and more efficient.
It can be said that the first few years of a newborn is the most influential: they shape the baby’s physical health and personality. This necessitates parents’ skills in taking care of their newborns – good guidance will make the education process easier in the future. In reality, however, not all parents are equiped with sufficient parenting skill. This is especially true when they have their first children – they are overwhelmed by a situation they have never experienced. For instance, many unfortunate accidents happen to infants every day because of neglection, and there are also many cases of nutritional problems among young children due to overeating or unbalanced diets, which can be attributed to the lack of knowledge among young parents. These situations demand lessons aimed at providing students with relevant knowledge.
Moving onto why should schools be the ones to teach these skills, it is because of the experience teachers have in taking care of children. As a result, they have a deep understanding of youth – whom will be both the learners and the subject in these lectures. In addition, through working in the education sector, they are also one of the most suitable people in passing down knowledge. They can also utilize their position and schools’ environment to combine different subjects, expressing the various skills related to parenting in different fields such as biology and economy. In practice, some schools have mandatory lessons in parenting skills teached by teachers in each subject, who have a deeper understanding of their field.
In conclusion, it is vital that students learn how to take care of their future children, and schools can provide an environment suited for learning. As such, schools should provide lectures in parenting skills to their students.
