Band 9: some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people believe that competition in work, study, and daily life is beneficial, while others argue that cooperation is more advantageous than competition. Engaging in activities cooperatively fosters a supportive environment and enables effective teamwork, except in instances where individuals feel criticized and humiliated in comparison to others. Nevertheless, I believe that competition is a key factor in achieving significant improvements across various fields.

On one hand, teamwork facilitates a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere in any profession. Being in a comfort zone can create a sense of satisfaction with the work or study environment. Furthermore, it encourages a steady work pace without negative emotional downturns, as overcoming challenges together tends to be easier. Additionally, the lack of criticism and pressure to excel alleviates feelings of humiliation among coworkers. People often derive gratification from their contributions. For example, many employees in Turkish companies have remained in their positions for decades primarily due to the peaceful and collaborative work atmosphere.

On the other hand, rivalry among coworkers can lead to significant advancements over time. Furthermore, it promotes continuous motivation and productivity driven by the desire to excel. In this context, individuals utilize their skills and abilities more effectively to achieve better results by competing with one another. This rivalry also encourages personal development, as individuals strive to improve themselves and become the best versions of themselves. Consequently, their work efficiency tends to increase, as there is always someone better to strive towards, providing an ongoing goal to avoid stagnation. For instance, large, multi-billion dollar companies often have structured levels and rankings among their employees, with awards for top performers. This competitive atmosphere enhances productivity as workers aim to outperform their colleagues.

In conclusion, while collective efforts offer a supportive work environment free from comparisons and disappointment, a competitive setting encourages individuals to strive for excellence and continuously develop their skills. I believe that competing with like-minded individuals pursuing similar goals can yield better results in any field, maintaining motivation and contributing to notable success.
