There is an ongoing debate about whether governments should establish a law that would make it mandatory for people to retake their driving tests every 5 years. While some individuals believe that this would be the right decision, others see it as an additional burden for the majority of people. Personally, I strongly support the former statement because I believe that the advantages of compulsory retaking of driver exams every 5 years far outweigh its disadvantages.
With regard to the positive effects of such an initiative, it is essential to note that it would reduce the incidence of road accidents. To be explicit, it is a frequent occurrence that many drivers tend to experience minor memory loss in terms of knowledge of traffic regulations over the years. Because of this, not only does the number of traffic accidents increase, but it also influences the level of road safety in a negative way. Subsequently, having to retake a driving test every five years would help some individuals refresh their memory and become more confident in their ability to drive safely. As a result, this could improve road safety for both drivers and pedestrians. Another significant benefit of such regulation is the help it could provide the governments with in terms of identifiying certain individuals who pose a potential threat to the safety of other people. For instance, there are some drivers who received their driver’s license more than 20 years ago but haven’t had any real experience or could have adopted some negative habits that could possibly lead to road accidents. Therefore, such initiatives would help governments with eliminating potential threats to public safety.
Turning to the drawbacks of forcing people to retake their driving tests every 5 years, it is undeniably true that such establishments could place a significant financial or psychological burden on both drivers and the authorities. To elaborate, the suggested initiative would mean that every driver in a country would have to take this exam. Furthermore, the number of cars and other kinds of vehicles that are owned by the drivers tends to be relatively high in nearly every region of the world, as cars have become an absolute necessity in the modern world. This means that if the governments decided to make it compulsory for people to retake their driving tests every five years, thousands, if not millions, of people would have to apply for the suggested procedure. Consequently, this means that they will have to pay a fee to enter the driving test that does not guarantee a reliable result that would prove that a person is a safe driver in real life conditions. Furthermore, some individuals with certain personality traits, such as a habit of overthinking, might feel pressured while retaking their driving test which could affect their performance during the procedure. Therefore, such an initiative does not automatically prove the level of a person’s driving skills. However, some of these issues can be mitigated on a certain level by ensuring that the grading system and the conditions in which people would take the exam are accurate and convenient for every person.
To conclude, although there are some serious disadvantages of making it mandatory for people to retake their driving exams every five years, I hold the belief that the advantages of this initiative far outweigh the drawbacks due to the fact that the negative effects mentioned in the previous paragraph can be solved by taking some regulatory measures.
