Schools are a place where many gathers in order to obtain the necessary skills needed in life. Some believed that the competitiveness of school can be harmful for students, while others argue otherwise. The competitive environment can act as catalyst in maximising the input obtained from school.
First, the competitiveness environment can fully bring out the full potential of children. This is because in order to take the top spot, a combination of both understanding and memorization is required. For example, learning mathematics also requires comprehension of the questions on top of knowing which formula to use. To add on, the competition can act as a goal for students and in turn become a source of motivation. This is crucial, especially for teenagers who are struggling mentally, as it can become a guidance for students that do not have any end-goal. Hence, the competition in school serves as a fertiliser to accelerate the growth of children.
However, excess competition in school can sometimes cause both mental and physical fatigues. This is because every children has their own pace of learning together with learning methods. Some might be academically gifted, while others are not. This will result in children developing the habit of easily giving up . Thus, it is important to have competition in moderation in order to avoid burnt out as “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.
In conclusion, in order to encourage students to do their best in school while also keeping it fun, competitive yet moderate environment is a must have for every school.
