It is widely argued what kind of impact does the social media has on the modern society. There are 2 main opposing opinions – first group of people believe that social media has a positive effect on society, conversely second group think that social media had a negative effect. Let’s examine both perspectives.
Turning to the first viewpoint, social media has a positive influence on the society. Development of the social media, such as YouTube and Instagram, opened many doors to the humanity. Something that previously required in-person attandence, nowadays available from any point in the world. For example, the only source of the information before social media was a book. And in purpose to obtain the book, person usually had to go to the library. Such action sequence required enormous amount of time and effort. By contrast, today any piece of information is available in the phones through Google and Wikipedia. Same situation with sport events. Beforehand, people had to attend every event in-person, while today any kind of event is available through the streaming services.
On the other hand, opposing group of people believes that social media has a negative impact. The procrastination problem is arrising with significant speed. The algorithms inside the applications are made in such way that sucks in the person like a black hole. Individual is not able to track time while watching new content. That leads to enormous amount of time spent inside such apps. In addition, the idea of “successful” life image is widely shared across the internet. Its never been that easy to portray the fake success story into young people minds. Consequently, the fake and unnature life expectations are build up amount younger generation.
In my opinion, as a representative of the Gen Z generation, social media definitely has a positive influence on the society if used wisely. The accessability of different information sources opened different opportunities for huge diversity of people.
