It is argued that the most effective method of retribution is the increase in jail time, while others believe there still exist alternative options to punish criminals. In my opinion, both approaches present both merits and demerits, yet I think the alternatives such as community-based initiatives would be superior to lengthening a criminal’s sentence.

On the one hand, many believe that a longer imprisonment period could significantly reduce the crime rate. primarily because this policy can serve as a deterrent to discourage those who have the intention to break the law as they are fully aware of the impending punishment they may face in court if they fail. Therefore, these individuals may rethink carefully before making mistakes that could have severe consequences for their future. Furthermore, during a longer period of incarceration with appropriate education, prisoners could have another chance to rehabilitate since they have thoroughly realized their behavior. However, this approach may potentially induce dissatisfaction among the individuals, given that some cases are imprisoned for years of life despite their unintentional attempts, which could lead to more recidivism.

On the other hand, I am in agreement with the fact that alternatives can also play a significant role in reducing the crime rate. The government could organize workshops or campaigns in order to educate people about legal knowledge, which later can help them have a clearer view of the severe consequences when committing a crime. For example, there are numerous preventive measures that aim to raise the youth’s awareness about doing illegal activities and also encourage greater empathy towards the offenders, which facilitates their reintegration into society.

In conclusion, both approaches have their advantages, however, instead of excessively increasing the time for one’s sentence, I believe raising the awareness of citizens through community events, and ensuring that people who are in jails will be able to rehabilitate still remain paramount and effective.
