The question of whether university education should be free remains a controversial issue. While some argue that higher education ought to be funded by the state, others believe students should bear the financial responsibility themselves.
On the one hand, free university education would promote social equality. Talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds would have equal access to academic opportunities. Moreover, a well-educated population contributes to economic growth and innovation, which benefits society as a whole.
On the other hand, funding higher education entirely through taxation may place a significant burden on governments. In addition, when students invest their own money, they may be more motivated to complete their studies successfully. It could be argued that personal financial contribution increases commitment and responsibility.
In my view, while completely free education may not be feasible in every country, governments should provide substantial financial support to ensure equal access. A balanced approach, combining tuition fees with scholarships and grants, appears to be the most sustainable solution.
