Without a doubt, journalism has become a massive industry that significantly shapes people’s opinions about current events. Some individuals argue that the news broadcasted by media outlets can have detrimental effects on society. I partially agree with this viewpoint, but I cannot overlook the power of journalism in other important aspects.
One major reason why people question the credibility of news media is the prevalence of false information disseminated by certain channels in pursuit of higher viewership. Often, news stories are sensationalized to evoke strong emotional reactions, ultimately misleading viewers and depriving them of accurate and verified information. Additionally, the focus on negative events, such as road accidents, robberies, rapes, and murders, can instill a sense of fear and insecurity among citizens. This fear may discourage people from leaving their homes or visiting public spaces, thereby denying many children and young adults the freedom they deserve.
However, it would be unjust to overlook the importance of news media in our society. It serves as the primary channel connecting the public with the government. New policies and laws are often enacted based on the general perspectives and needs of citizens. Furthermore, news media plays a crucial role in ensuring that justice is served to victims. It empowers people to raise their voices against injustice and bias. For instance, the Indian rapists involved in the ‘Nirbhaya case’ were sentenced to death due in part to the pressure exerted by news channels.
In conclusion, while sensationalist reporting can foster negative perceptions among the public, the positive impact of journalism on a larger scale is worth acknowledging.
