Band 6+: Some people think that the use of computers in primary and secondary schools makes education more enjoyable and efficient, while others believe that too much dependence on computers causes both physical and emotional problems.

There is a debate about the role of computers among primary and secondary school children. While some are supportive of their contribution to making lessons more enjoyable and efficient, others are pessimistic considering their various health problems. In my opinion, computers are essential in education sphere; however, they need to be used in moderation to avoid the negative effects.

On the one hand, there is ample evidence to prove that involvement of computers makes lessons more fulfilling and interactive. One reason for this is that most students find book-reading and paper-writing rather boring. For example, the widespread adoption of computers, electronic smart-boards, overhead projectors and others in the education sphere has made a significant difference, by enabling teaching to show their preprepared lessons within a much shorter span. Moreover, the use of visuals such as graphs, pictures and video lessons help students understand complex theorems and processes more vividly thanks to slide shows and internet access.

Nevertheless, the critics of computer technology are concerned about the negative impacts of using computers excessively. One explanation for their rightful concern is that computer screen is known to emit high levels of ultra-violet lights, which might lead to diverse health hazards. For instance, while eyesight damage and development of poor body posture are potential physical drawbacks of sitting in front of a computer too long, the mental side-effects appear to be laziness and a sense of isolation. Numerous studies have confirmed that the excessive use of computers, especially among teenagers, is the leading cause of decreasing socialization.

In my opinion, the use of computers in primary and secondary schools is indeed worth consideration. This is because when children overuse them or ignore the instruction of how to utilize them correctly, this can have health repercussions. However, this is so only if computers are used excessively, and luckily most state schools do not allow for such excessive use of computers. Furthermore, the ability to work with and use the computer is an essential employability skill, determining the future success of young children.
