Nowadays, some people maintain that there should be a complete ban on all types of advertisments. In this essay, I would argue that a total ban would be disproportionate and unfair, considering the advantages of them, while strict regulations are vital in this matter.
In recent years, concerns regarding advertisements have been surging at an unprecendented pace. This leads to individuals thinking that ads should be banned. It is true that ads manipulate vulnerable consumers and promote excessive consumption. Furthermore, advertisements create a narrative that only certain lifestyles and appearances are attractive, through products that they associate with social status and happiness. In addition to this, products such as VELO or ZAYN that incorporate nicotine, are also promoted through ads; these ads are then targeted towards youngsters and pose a potent threat of addiction.
On the other hand, looking at only one aspect of the picture is not the right approach. Advertising provide useful information to consumers and enable businesses to compete. For example, ads can give updates about the discounts on certain products, helping the viewers save some money and enabling them to make informed purchasing decisions. Meanwhile, because of advertisements, brands compete and introduce new features and advancements in their products, benefitting the buyers. So, governments should make strict laws against harmful and misleading ads, instead of banning every ad.
In conclusion, the downsides of advertising cannot be overlooked or ignored, nevertheless a complete ban is neither practical nor fair, because ads have multiple strengths which are advantageous for the consumers and are far from negligible. Thus, strict laws and regulations should be imposed by the authorities, regarding ads.
