Band 7+: Some people think that zoos are cruel and should be closed down. Others, however, believe that zoos can be useful in protecting wild animals. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a debate surrounding the ethicality of maintaining zoos, with some individuals advocating for their closure due to the perceived cruelty towards animals, while others argue that zoos play a crucial role in the conservation of wildlife. In my opinion, I tend to support the perspective that zoos are indeed detrimental to the well-being of animals despite their success in breeding programs.

On one hand, it is undeniable that many zoos have been successful in their efforts to breed endangered species, contributing significantly to their preservation. This is particularly crucial for species threatened by activities such as poaching and habitat destruction. For instance, the population of one-horned rhinos in the wild had dwindled to a mere 600 individuals, but through captive breeding programs, the numbers have surged to over 3000, showcasing the positive impact of zoos in species conservation.

On the other hand, a considerable number of animals in zoos endure substandard living conditions, confined to cramped enclosures with limited space for movement, and sometimes even lacking access to essential resources like food and water. A poignant illustration of this is the case of Panda Lele, whose untimely death at Memphis Zoo was attributed to neglect and mistreatment. Such instances highlight the ethical concerns regarding the practices in zoos, where the focus on visitor experience often compromises the well-being of the animals. Despite attempts to recreate natural habitats within zoo enclosures, the necessity to maintain boundaries for visitor safety hinders the animals’ freedom and leads to distress and psychological deterioration, ultimately resulting in premature deaths.

In conclusion, while zoos undeniably contribute to the protection of endangered species through breeding programs, the ethical implications of confining animals in inadequate conditions overshadow the benefits. The suffering experienced by captive animals in zoos raises significant moral concerns, making it imperative to reassess the ethical framework within which zoos operate to ensure the well-being of these creatures.
