It is contentious whether art curricula should be included and be on equal footing with other basic subjects as math and science at the primary level. In my vantage point, I do see teaching art in all forms to be obligatory at early stage of school owing to the role it plays in feeding the imagination of students as well as spotting any potential artistic talents as early as possible.
The spark of imagination that reading literature in specific at age 9 and 10 contributes to the thorough grasp of other crucial subjects. The multifaceted perspectives that novels and its various themes provide unleashing the mind of pupils for wider horizon of thinking which foster their critical thinking skills that applies for all field of study. One study conducted by Michigan State University revealed that participants under age 12 who were more inclined toward art have outsmarted and significantly outperformed their counterparts who did not share the same interest. Therefore, last year , Malaysia phased in teaching literature starting from 3 grade as electives courses for any students who showcases any interest in art and numerous countries have followed suit.
Also, excavating and unearthing any artistically arising gifted pupils should be taken into account at early age. The importance of this lays in equipping the proper support and environment for such pupils to thrive and achieve their full potential when the course is due through consistent encouragement and early development. For instance, the talent of luminaries in the arena of novel writing like ,Paula Hawkins , Margret Atwood and Gillian Flynn were discovered at very young age so that they find it less of a hindrance to deploy and refine their writing skill standing out of crowd at the threshold of twenties accordingly .
In conclusion, despite the debate revolving involving art in curriculum as a basic subject , I sway toward the view that adopt teaching art due to the vivid imagination that finds its way to other abstract and theoretical subjects as well as the paramount role of school to detect students with artistic tastes and help them to adopt and embody their talent so that it becomes their own career trajectory one day.
