There is an ongoing debate about whether secondary schools should provide a broad education across various subjects or focus on fewer subjects related to a specific career. While specialized education can be useful, I believe a well-rounded education offers more advantages.
Firstly, studying a variety of subjects helps students develop a broader perspective and discover their interests. If students are required to focus only on career-related subjects, they may feel pressured and lose motivation. However, exposure to different fields, including arts and humanities, allows them to explore various career options. As a result, they can make more informed decisions about their future.
On the other hand, specialized education allows students to concentrate on subjects relevant to their careers, which can be beneficial. For example, in some countries, high scores in specific subjects, such as mathematics or English, are crucial for university admission and employment. Focusing on these subjects can help students achieve their goals more efficiently. Additionally, avoiding subjects they are not interested in can reduce stress and improve academic performance.
My personal experience demonstrates both the benefits and challenges of focused education. I studied at Abyroi, a well-known private school in my city, which was previously called 125 High School in 2022. Students joined in the 10th or 11th grade to prepare for the national exam (ЕНТ). In my branch, we studied seven selected subjects, including mathematics, Kazakh, and Russian. Education there was expensive, and we had a demanding schedule from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM without holidays.
In conclusion, while specialized education has its benefits, I believe a general education provides students with more opportunities and better career choices. Schools should offer a balanced approach to ensure students receive a well-rounded education
