Some students take a year gap between finishing school and going to university. Although it has both advantages and disadvantages, I think advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The main benefits include gaining practical experience and making better career choices, while the major drawback is students may lose their academic routine and find it difficult to return to studies after a year.
To begin with, one of the major advantages is that students can gain practical experience through internships, part-time jobs and attending volunteer works. This can boost their confidence level, communication skill. They learn time management skill along with an ability to work as a team. Moreover, it helps students to find their field of interest, especially in those who are confused about which area to choose for higher education.
Furthermore, it allows students to be more responsible and independent, resulting in better employment opportunities in the future. For example, a student who starts working in a company can learn how to manage tasks, communicate with colleagues and deal with workplace responsibilities efficiently. They can also prepare and attempt for competitive examinations to acquire admission in reputed universities.
However, taking a year gap result in loss of interest in study among students. They get completely diverted from academic life, making difficult to complete further studies. Some even find hard to concentrate when they return to education. I took a year gap after my graduation, and it was difficult for me to get back on track with the education. Furthermore, students taking year gap graduate one year later than their friends. Some students may even lose interest in pursuing higher education once they start earning money.
To conclude, although taking one year off between school and university can have some disadvantages, I believe that its advantages outweigh the drawbacks.
