The debate whether children themselves should choose their free time activities or be determined by parents has long been a topic of discussion, with some believing that it’s parents responsibility to arrange activities for their children while others argue that children choosing their free time activities better prepares them for the future. I personally believe that parents supervision over taking up childrenʼs spare time activities has more benefits.
One key advantage of parents role in selecting activities for their children is that it promotes a wiser choice of pasttimes based on their own experience. When parents decide on what to do for their children, they tend to make the most sensible decision relying on their real- life experience. As a result, children, are less likely to
end up choosing unsuitable activities to their nature which not only wastes their time but also triggers to miss their chances to prepare themselves for future career choices. For example, children who have talent for sport should not be engaged in art activities thus being dependent on parents guidance to make the right decision is profound.
On the other hand, proponents argue that giving children freedom to choose their activities enhance their self independence. As long as, children are concentrated on their interested activities, they can build their confident in their ability to manage their decisions. This is, in turn results in, stronger academic performances, thereby increasing their potential for professional achievements. This exemplified by students with a talent at drawing and painting, who can gain success in art if they brush upon their capabilities, but they frequently insisted by their parents to do useful activities leading to loss of their remarkable skills. Therefore, allowing children to pick their own activities can serve as a catalyst for having high self-esteem and reaching their full potential.
In conclusion, while letting children choose their free time activities may encourage them to be more independent in decision making I strongly advocate for parentsʼ priority to make a decision for their childrenʼs free time diversions preventing from opting for wrong career path.
