Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 9: Some universities offer online courses as an alternative to classes delivered on campus. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the contemporary educational landscape, it is increasingly evident that numerous higher education institutions are transitioning from conventional classroom-based instruction to online course offerings. I contend that this trend represents a predominantly negative development, primarily due to the lack of opportunities for meaningful intellectual exchange and the propensity for diminished concentration amongst students.

One significant disadvantage of online courses offered as an alternative to traditional classroom instruction is the inherent limitation on students’ ability to engage in direct discussions and collaborative learning experiences with both their peers and educators. For instance, in a large-scale online course, the instructor may struggle to facilitate interaction with all participants, address individual inquiries, or implement supportive learning activities. Consequently, this can hinder students’ comprehension of the material, leaving them with fundamental misunderstandings and a lack of clarity regarding key concepts.

Additionally, another notable drawback of online learning platforms is the challenge that they pose to students’ ability to maintain focus. With the myriad of distractions available through digital devices, such as social media applications and non-educational content, students often find it increasingly difficult to concentrate on their studies. This lack of concentration can have dire implications for academic performance. For example, students may frequently divert their attention to their phones during lessons, ultimately resulting in subpar academic outcomes. Moreover, the inability of instructors to effectively gauge students’ true competencies can lead to inflated grades, obscuring a student’s actual understanding and critical thinking skills.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the growing trend among colleges and universities to implement online courses as substitutes for traditional classroom instruction is largely detrimental. The adverse effects on students’ concentration and the absence of interactive learning environments significantly outweigh any potential benefits. It is essential for educational institutions to recognize the importance of personal interaction and engagement in the learning process and to strive for a balanced approach that incorporates both online and in-person instruction.
