Study subjects in universities have become a hot topic in many debates nowadays, considering students’ skill qualifications for the future. However, some people think students should learn about other fields, while others believe it is more necessary to focus on their main major. This essay will elaborate on both views and give my own perspective.
On the one hand, it is certainly true that by studying new fields, students can develop important new abilities. As trainees who want to pursue their dream jobs, it is necessary things to learn additional skills because the working world needs skilled people who can attract companies’ attention. For example, many companies filter employees based on the talents listed in their curriculum vitae or LinkedIn accounts before hiring them.
On the other hand, additional skills should not only focus on job requirements but also on proficiency. In other words, several jobs require people who are experts in their career areas, such as researchers or doctors. For instance, patients need competent and reliable doctors when they come to the hospital because they give up on the doctor that handle them. The more expert the doctor are, the more important and useful they will be.
In my opinion, either focusing on the main major, which can lead to expertise, or being involved in supplementary subjects is important to improve ourselves and develop us into skilful and talented individuals.
To sum up, even though learning new subjects has a significant impact on skill qualification, professional competence can also be considered important and holds an equal position.
