People have different view about whether the crucial things for university students is to make all efforts for a qualification. While in some way it may seem reasonable, I personally believe that students should learn about other fields.
The main reason why it might be considered beneficial to allow undergraduates to pay attention to their main disciplines is that a qualification is essential for students to find a job in the future. To be more specific, modern companies require graduations certificate because it is a proof of the applicants’ ability, especially businesses that offer high wages. This means that people who want to get a desirable job should study for certificate in universities. However, if they do not go all out, getting a degree can be difficult. Therefore, it is necessary for undergraduates to give all their time and attention to qualification.
However, I would agree with those who wants to gain more knowledge in addition subjects. Firstly, exposure to content in other field provide college students opportunities to broaden their horizons. For many science and technology students, learning more humanities and social science subjects enable them to enrich their spiritual life, rather than doing calculation everyday. Secondly, the knowledge in other disciplines can make it easy to understand the main subjects. For instance, individuals who learn computer science usually decide to study mathematics or logic when they find difficulties in programming.
In conclusion, it seems to me that it would be better, on balance, for undergraduates to learn about other courses instead of focusing on the main subjects.
