In previous days, people used to go internationally to seek many differences from their nations. In today’s society, cities across the world are increasingly identical. This essay will explore the reasons for this phenomenon. Personally, although this trend has certain drawbacks, I believe the benefits are more significant.
There are several reasons why metropolises around the world are becoming alike. The first reason is globalization. This is because multi-national chains tend to open their branches in cities across the world. As a result, these chains may apply the same layouts for every store to boost brand awareness, making the urban regions in different parts in the world are likely to look the same. Secondly, a great number of metropolises apply successful planning models of developed countries. For example, many skyscrapers and metro systems have been constructed following Europeans countries. As a result, these modifications allow cities to deal with some problems including traffic congestion and house shortage, which can make the infrastructure of many cities are becoming identical.
Admittedly, some people may argue that the similarities of urban areas globally has some disadvantages. According to this view, local residents tend to lose their cultural identity because they are largely expose to cuisine from international brands, such as fast food from KFC, and forget their traditional food. However, this opinion overlooks the fact that local authorities tend to preserve cultural values by introducing educated programes in schools or advertising local tradition on social media. Therefore, not only can gorvernments safeguard traditional identity, but they also may advertise it to tourists. In my opinion, the upsides of alike cities across the globe are more considerable because it can relieve culture shock for tourists. Due to the differences in cuisine, some foreign tourists might not easily to get familiar with the local food. As a result, a mixture of local food and international dishes could let tourists have more choices, which may bring better experiences for them.
In conclusion, various factors explain why metropolises are getting more and more similar. While there are several demerits of identical cities around the world, my view is that the merits outweigh them.
