With the breakthrough of technology, social media is ultilized by users around the world to connect with each other and news reading. Even though numerous benefits are derived from this development, I personally opine that there are more drawbacks than the advantages. In this essay, I will shed light on both views with supporting evidence.
In terms of the positives of social media as a means to help people with daily communication and updating news, it is beneficial due to its convenience and money saving. It is compelling to say that a great quantity of time and energy are saved thanks to the appearance of social media platforms such as facebook, and instagram. This is highly efffective to facilitate communication especially with people in far distances, they can not only have verbal communication but also be able to see each other via video calls. Another merit of this phenomenon is that these tools are generally free of charge and therefore, more cost-effective than other conventional methods including mails, texts or phone calls. As a result, it has gained popularity for people at all ages around the world due to its convenience and economical benefits.
On the other hand, I am convinced that its negative repercussions in the long run surpass the positives. First of all, a growing number of users, especially the young are glued to the screen and become addicted to social media. It has been reported through surveys that many people lack real-life communication skills and their academic study or work can be adversely affected.
In addition to that, the crime rate related to online communication has been on the rise such as cyber crime, and fraud. Take Vietname as an example, with 73% of total population having access to the internet, we face many challenges in ensuring children are safe on the internet.
To sum up, with the aforementioned explanations, I contend that there are more shortcomings of the prevalence of online interaction, particularly the increase of wrong-doings compared to its positives of convenience.
