In today’s world, social media plays a vital role in our lives when it comes to communication and updating newest information. In this essay, I will discuss the good points, bad points of this phenomenon and clarify the reason why I think the advantages exceed the disadvantages.
First of all, one of the positive sides of this development is that social media provides users with an easy access to stay connected with friends and family across the world. In other words, its accessibility breaks geographical barriers so that people are able to reach out to each other whenever they want to. Take the chatting application – Messenger as a typical example of this. With this useful app, people can talk, exchange information, or even playing mini-games regardless of their locations. Secondly, another benefit of this is that social platforms keep their customers updated with the latest news. This convenience can easily be seen during the Covid-19 pandemic, citizens were timely informed about the outspread of the disease so that they could be more prepared to cope with it.
However, this trend also poses threats to our mental health. Firstly, due to the immediate update function of social media, people might suffer from peer pressure when using it. What I am trying to say is that when users are surfing the web, they might encounter various flexing posts from their friends. This can unintentionally creates some negative feelings for them, especially with the low self-esteem ones. Next, as we can easily contact each other through social media, people tend to stay at home to talk instead of going out to meet their folks. As a result, they might become more reluctant or even refuse to interact when it comes to face-to-face communication.
In my opinion, even though the disadvantages of social media are significant, its advantages should not be overlooked because its positive impacts on our daily lives are undeniable. Since the introduction of this innovative social networking site, our lives have never been this fast and convenient and I cannot imagine a world without it.
In conclusion, social media is an irreplaceable feature of our lives because it remarkably improves our experiences.
