The idea of using social media to stay connected with others and get the news is gaining popularity in various countries. While this has admittedly certain benefits, I would content that this is largely a negative development.
On the one hand, having social media to keep in touch and catch up with news can be advantageous to a certain extent. This is because social media is very convenient and fast, imaging you can be text and update your life with your friend, who is maybe 100 kilometers far from just in the matter of seconds. This can help you stay connected with friends who are far from you, and all you need is just a click. All of these things just seems so effortless. Another advantage could be that you can have all the news across the word from various countries in an app, and you can instantly share your thoughts with others. For instance, you can have news from the official publisher account in X, from then you can retweet your thought to attract more people to comment.
On the other hand, I am convinced that the aforementioned benefits pale in significance when compared to drawbacks of social media. One legitimate concern revolves around the quality of relationship people can have by only using social media, which can result in being superficial with real life relationship since all you do in the social media can almost be done less than a minutes. Deep relationship requires more dedication, more time to understand each other. Another drawback is that lacking in critical thinking skill may lead to misunderstand and mislead the information. This problem becomes more serious since we can have multiple source of news by having social media. This can make fake news more easily engaged with people, but these news are very hard to recognize and reported. With the help of education and the government, we can hope these fake news won’t be a problem.
In conclusion, despite certain benefits of social media, I am of the opinion that its drawbacks are far more glaring.
