Band 9: The average standard of people's health is likely to be lower in the future than it is now. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is often argued that the average standard of people’s health will decline in the future. This essay agrees with this statement due to the increasing levels of environmental pollution and the growing consumption of unhealthy food, both of which are expected to have significant negative impacts on public health.

One major reason for the predicted decline in health standards is environmental pollution. Rapid industrialization and urbanization have led to an alarming increase in air, water, and soil pollution. For example, factories and vehicles release large quantities of harmful gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which contribute to poor air quality. Prolonged exposure to polluted air can lead to severe respiratory diseases, such as asthma and chronic bronchitis, as well as cardiovascular problems. Additionally, water contamination caused by industrial waste and agricultural runoff can spread harmful bacteria, resulting in diseases like cholera and dysentery. As pollution continues to rise, people’s health is likely to deteriorate further in the coming years.

Another factor contributing to declining health is the widespread consumption of unhealthy food. In modern society, people increasingly rely on fast food and processed meals due to their convenience and affordability. However, these foods are often high in fat, sugar, and salt, which can lead to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease when consumed regularly. For instance, a study published by the World Health Organization (WHO) found that fast food consumption has doubled over the past two decades, correlating with a rise in obesity rates worldwide. In addition, the prevalence of street food and low-quality meals in many regions exposes individuals to foodborne illnesses caused by poor hygiene and contamination. These dietary habits are likely to exacerbate health problems in the future.

In conclusion, this essay agrees that the average standard of health will decline in the future due to increasing environmental pollution and the continued reliance on unhealthy food. To mitigate these issues, governments and individuals must take proactive measures to improve air quality and promote healthier eating habits. Without such efforts, the predicted decline in health standards may become a reality.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Read the following text from an educational magazine. Some people believe that university students are required to attend classes. Professors view class attendance as an individual student responsibility. However, many students want to be given the freedom to decide which classes to attend. Therefore, going to classes should be optional for students. Write an essay to an educated reader to tell which point of view you agree with. Include specific reasons and any relevant examples to support your answer. You should write at least 250 words

Opinions are divided on whether class attendance should remain mandatory or optional for university students.
