Band 9: the average standard of people's health is likely to be lower in the future than it is now. to what extent do you agreee or diagree.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is sometimes predicted that the overall standard of public health will deteriorate in the future. I largely agree with this view because increasingly sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets and rising levels of psychological stress are likely to outweigh the benefits created by medical progress.

The principal threat to future health is the way in which modern lifestyles discourage physical activity. A growing proportion of the population works at desks, travels by car and spends leisure time using digital devices. This lack of movement increases the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The problem is particularly concerning among children, many of whom now spend more time playing video games or using social media than participating in outdoor activities. Unless this pattern changes, lifestyle-related illnesses are likely to become more widespread.

Poor dietary habits may further reduce the average level of health. Processed food is often cheaper, more convenient and more heavily advertised than fresh produce, making it an attractive option for busy families. However, such food frequently contains excessive amounts of sugar, salt and saturated fat. At the same time, modern societies are experiencing greater levels of stress, loneliness and sleep deprivation. Consequently, future generations may suffer not only from physical illnesses but also from anxiety, depression and other mental-health conditions.

Admittedly, medical science is advancing rapidly. Improved diagnostic technology, more effective treatments and greater access to health information could allow people to live longer and manage diseases more successfully. Nevertheless, a longer life expectancy does not necessarily indicate better health. People may survive serious illnesses while continuing to experience chronic conditions that significantly reduce their quality of life. Medical treatment is therefore unlikely to compensate fully for widespread unhealthy behaviour.

In conclusion, although technological and medical developments will improve the treatment of disease, I believe that the general standard of health is likely to decline. Without major changes in diet, physical activity and stress management, people may live longer but spend a greater proportion of their lives in poor health.
