In the modern world, companies and factories are characterized by a high degree of toxic waste production. There are many units that do not possess facilities for waste treatment of their own. This has become a liability for such companies as they face the danger of being shut down by the government for the motive of protecting the environment. I do not quite agree that the government should pursue the same. While I acknowledge the initiative, I do not feel that it is a good decision.
The environment we live in today has been exposed to multiple threats for a long period of time. These include day-to-day activities we do not even notice, such as deforestation, overgrazing, burning of waste crops on a large scale, and many agricultural practices such as slash-and-burn farming, et cetera. These are much bigger problems than the harmful materials excreted out of the factories. In fact, if the government takes responsible steps like providing proper facilities to companies that cannot afford them, then there would be no issues in waste management.
A recent study shows that most of our daily utilities are produced in industrial units that contribute most of the toxic waste which deteriorates our environment. So the motive of the government to protect the environment is valid; however, if these companies are closed, then the economy will go into a crisis where demand of daily essentials would rise and there wouldn’t be enough supply to meet it. In the worst case, the country may also have to face a turmoil, with a large middle-class population suffering and protesting for their quality of life.
Looking at the environment, there is no denying that the residue of such industries are often burnt on a massive scale which leads to air pollution. This further results in various health problems, especially in old people. It becomes increasingly difficult for animals too; they are unable to live peacefully on the land that has been theirs since the beginning of life. However, considering how deeply we are integrated in this ecosystem, a possible disruption in it is too big a cost for protecting the environment.
I am not saying that the march towards defending mother nature should be stopped; I feel that it comes at a price we cannot afford to pay. To me, the negative consequences of the given proposal seem to outweigh the benefits. As a result, I disagree with the given statement. Environment protection can be achieved while maintaining a balance in our daily life, such as by limiting deforestation, educating the farmers on how to practice agriculture while securing the natural surroundings, and providing essential facilities to companies that lack them.
