Band 9: The increase in the production of consumer goods results in damage to the natural environment. What are the causes of this? What can be done to solve this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, manufacturing activities have expanded significantly to meet customer demand. However, this growth has adversely affected the environment. The following paragraphs outline several reasons for this issue and propose potential solutions.

Firstly, to maximize profits and attract buyers, many companies continuously introduce low-cost products that often do not live up to their promises. Moreover, these products are frequently non-biodegradable. Despite their short lifespan, they can persist in landfills for thousands of years, transforming our planet into a massive waste site and threatening the natural habitats of countless species. Secondly, in order to produce a sufficient quantity of goods for consumers, factories must operate with greater productivity. This increased output results in higher levels of industrial emissions and chemical wastewater. As production rises, so do the toxic wastes and pollutants released into the environment, leading to the contamination of water sources and severe air pollution, which consequently affects marine and terrestrial wildlife.

Given the significant risks to the environment, immediate remedial measures for the consequences of commodity production must be implemented. First and foremost, organizations should utilize eco-friendly materials for their products, as these materials contribute to a healthier environment. For instance, Starbucks, a major coffee chain, has switched from plastic straws to more sustainable alternatives that are less harmful to the planet. Additionally, governments have been promoting the development of sustainable manufacturing processes. For example, many states in the U.S. offer tax incentives for businesses that utilize renewable energy, and some companies can purchase green energy at lower prices than conventional fossil fuels.

In conclusion, there are two primary reasons for the negative impact on the environment due to manufacturing activities. In light of these factors, both the government and companies must implement effective solutions to combat environmental pollution.
