The number of health issues related to poor eating habits such as high blood pressure and obesity is on the rise in many parts of the world. This can be attributed to the lack of restaurants that serve healthy meals and the busy lifestyle of people, and it is important to take steps to counter these problems.
There are two main factors behind the changing diets of people. The main reason is connected to the fast pace of modern life. Due to the hectic schedules, people are too busy to devote enough time for a proper meal, and because of this, they have to settle with quicker options such as fast food. Because these foods are usually high in empty calories and packed with chemicals that are harmful for our bodies, their consumption leads to rising obesity levels. Another major cause is the lack of cafes and restaurants that offer a healthier menu. Take my country – Uzbekistan. Most residents are unable to find healthy foods even if they wanted to, which forces them to consume unhealthy meals. Given the popularity of convenience foods, business owners, too, are keen on opening more such facilities instead of places that serve nutritional foods, compounding the problem of poor eating habits.
The way forward is for the government to promote a healthier diet. This can be achieved by subsidizing cafes and restaurants that cook healthy meals, and possibly introducing a special tax on fast food chains such as KFC and BurgerKing. Doing so can encourage more people to eat healthily, as unhealthy meals will become less affordable, and healthier options cheaper. To address the problem of eating habits at work, companies should nudge their employees to bring home-cooked meals rather than snacking on pizzas and chocolate bars. This involves creating the right atmosphere with the help of a cozy buffet coupled with introducing longer breaks for lunch. The leaders of the company should also set an example by sitting down with their colleagues over a healthy meal, thus making it a tradition in the workplace to eat healthily.
In conclusion, while unhealthy eating habits largely stem from having too little time and shortage of facilities that offer a healthy menu, these issues can be tackled with the help of government intervention and initiatives taken by the employers.
