Band 4+: There seems to be an increasing trend towards assessing students through exams rather than through continual assessment.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Recently, the famous topics among debaters focus on education topics. Certain individuals belief that ongoing assessment such as group work and project should be used to assess student’s performance rather than test. In my view, on going assessment should not outweigh examination, both should be equally assessed.

First of all, exams provide standardized way to evaluate student’s understanding on course materials. They can cover wide range of topics and all students are assess with the same content. However, it hard to make sure all chapters can be included in one single group work or projects. It will result in increase the numbers of ongoing assessment and it’s duration. Supposedly, ongoing assessment should reduce the stress or pressure of student because the load of assessment is distributed eventually throughout the term.

Secondly, collaboration and communication skills can be developed by taking part in group or projects which are valuable in real world scenarios. These skills can be added up if students being assess with exams. Exams can enhance their cognitive skills where students need to think critically and find solutions for the complex problems given in the exam questions. All the skills are essential for student during their employment later on.

In conclusion, it is important to ensure the students are evaluated correspondingly. Student can be exposed to the standardised and interactive way of evaluation together, making the learning process more interesting. Apart from that, communication, collaboration and cognitive skills can be developed concurrently. It will be more beneficial for their future developments. Hence, both type of assessment should be balanced.
