Band 7+: Today many people do not know their neighbours in large cities. What problems does this cause? What can be done about this.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s fast-paced world it has become increasingly rare to form close relationships with your neighbors. This lack of connection may lead to an increased sense of isolation among citizens and foster ignorance; however, it can be rectified through proactive efforts, particularly with the support of local governments.

Admittedly, this situation heightens the sense of isolation. People in megapolises are often occupied by running their own errands, spending their time working and pursuing personal growth, and there is always little time and emotional resources left to maintain connection with people who live nearby. This kind of lifestyle can be very lonely, increasing one’s stress levels and may even lead to depression. Similarly, people become too busy with their life that they no longer pay attention to people around them, their problems and needs. For example, in big cities like New York and Tokyo, residents tend to overlook those in need, thinking that they are too busy to deal with other people’s problems. Unfortunately, this growing indifference can be seen as a sign of poor social morals that have become normalized in urban life.

Regarding possible solutions, the most effective remedy is for the state to intervene. It might be said that governments can organize events or festivals that encourage people to go out and meet their neighbors, thereby fostering a stronger sense of community and increasing proximity between individuals in the same neighborhood. A good example can be witnessed in central Asian countries like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, where communities are very close-knit and hospitable. Alternatively, governments could initiate projects where people need to take part in pro-active and green movements that would develop their neighborhood. Engagement in this kind of activities sets a clear goal for people, leading to a shared sense of pride and duty. (Alternatively, governments could initiate projects that involve people in proactive, environmentally-focused movements aimed at improving their neighborhoods. Participation in such activities provides people with a clear, shared goal, fostering a collective sense of pride and responsibility.)

To conclude, lack of connection between neighbors results in reduced sense of community and ignorance. Solutions include organizing various projects aimed at uniting people within the same neighborhood and encouraging proactive engagement among residents.
