Traffic jam is becoming a menance in a lot of cities. This essay will elaborate factors causing this and suggest possible Solutions.
Firstly, Inadequate space in most big cities is one of the factors leading to vehicle congestion. Due to the ever increasing rate of population, a lot of buildings are been constructed, leaving little space for road construction. Some individuals even build on unauthorized land, making it difficult to construct major roads. For instance a popular neighbourhood in Ghana is noted for illegal erection of buildings hence they have been nicknamed “The slum zone” . There are few narrow streets in this community and has resulted in a lot of traffic jam.
Again, High standard of living contributes to this problem. With the emergence of a lot of financial institutions, acquiring a loan for a personal car is very common. This has led to a lot of cars in the system. With this, most people prefer driving thier own car to boarding a bus or train for thier day to day errands leading to traffic congestion.
To solve these issues, strict laws should be set for people who build unlawafully with no permit from building authorities such that any one found guilty should be made to pay a huge fine. Also, financial instutions should be urged to increase interest rates for vehicle loans to reduce the number of people who come in to get a car loan. If fewer people can access car loans then the number of cars in the system will be reduced.
In conclusion, insufficient space and private ownership of cars been common are some of the causes of traffic congestion in major cities but strict laws concerning both points as discussed earlier will help curb this problem.
