Whether conventional media are reliable is a controversial issue in modern society. Some people believe that media provides news credibility; others, however, think that media cannot share trustable news. People do not rely on anymore the media due to some concerns. In this essay, I will discuss the problems and how people handle these issues.
First and the foremost, there are few news media seem to be free political bias and also exaggerated reporting. This is mainly because they want to address some part of the community and attract attention of people. This leads to lack of neutrality. For instance, when a person who is important for the government, includes criminal situation and he is extremely guilty, partisan press can direct this news in a positive way of that person. Therefore, media have lost dependability in terms of people. However, press can prevent these actions. When they publicize the news or events, they should be more ethical and adopt balanced reporting. Thanks to these solutions, media can rebuild public trust easily.
Second, another significant factor behind the decline in trust is the lack of transparency and the growing influence of social media. Media do not have sufficient tools to check news reliability and people are affected by social media platforms easily because of rapid spread of misinformation and unclear sources. People can be tackled through fast-checking and media literacy education. Fast- checking platforms provide to check news before sharing it and media education should be included in curriculum to help people.
To conclude, although media are not trustable no longer, media can regain credibility of people by being ethical journalism, presenting multiple viewpoints, creating checking platforms, and adding media education school’s curriculum. These are extremely crucial steps to preserve media credibility.
