Band 9: Wild animals have no place in the 21st century, so protecting them is a waste of resources. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It has been proposed that since wild animals have no relevance in today’s world, wildlife preservation is synonymous with wasting resources. Personally, I am wholeheartedly opposed to this proposal.

Granted, in an era increasingly driven by scientific innovation, intellectual matters such as exceptional academic competencies and professional expertise are utmost keys to sustainable social advancement. This suggests that further development of humanity might necessitate greater resources and values that far transcend the scope of wildlife conservation, potentially dismissing its importance. However, this line of reasoning overlooks the continued dependence of modern science on wild animals. Innovations in both science and numerous other critical fields such as medicine and biology undoubtedly demand the involvement of animals. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, had it not been for crucial medical experiments on wild species such as mosquitoes and hamsters, there would not have been any timely release of vaccines. This example clearly demonstrates that protecting wild animals cannot be regarded as a waste of resources, even in a highly technological era.

More importantly, the natural world has been witnessing countless wild species being pushed to the brink of extinction. For this reason, channeling both financial and human resources into liberating natural fauna from a vicious cycle of dying out enables scientists and biologists to safeguard the integrity of biodiversity. In some cases, these well-preserved wild animals can even foster marked economic gains as they offer unique and one-of-a-kind experience to tourists. For example, given the ceaseless restorative endeavors allocated to protecting wild pandas, Chinese authorities have successfully attracted the influx of international visitors, thereby creating a myriad of lucrative career opportunities for job seekers. In turn, the benefits of preserving wild animals could go beyond ecological balance, permeating almost every aspect of the societal fabric and cultivating economic sustainability.

In conclusion, I maintain that wild animal species still play a pivotal role in not only contemporary science and many other core sectors but also sustaining biodiversity, rendering resource allocation to their conservation completely practical and forward-looking.
