Gender inequality is one of the most topical discussions nowadays, especially when it comes to work. It is often argued that men are better employees than women, because they do not need to care for children as much as women do. I do not believe that this is the case.
There are several reasons why a lot of companies prefer to employ men instead of women. Firstly, there is a stereotype that all women dream of becoming a mother and will eventually take maternity leave, what is unprofitable for employers. Secondly, there is no doubt that in many families childcare responsibilities commonly fall on females and it is considered that it is affecting their productivity. The fact that sometimes women have some maternity emergencies and need some days off from work has led many companies to justify paying them lower salaries than men, contributing to the gender pay gap.
However, this viewpoint is based on outdated stereotypes. In modern society, women can balance both family and work. I absolutely consider that salary should be based on skills, experiences and qualifications, not gender. Often women have the same qualifications and perform the same tasks as men, so they deserve to be paid fairly.
