Band 7+: Young people are often influenced in their behaviors by others in the same age group. Some argue that peer pressure is important while others feel it has distinct disadvantages. Do the disadvantages of peer pressure outweigh the advantages?

In recent times, peer pressure, the influence exerted by individuals of similar age, has become a common phenomenon experienced by young people. Although peer pressure is often associated with positive connotations, I would argue that its negative effects on individuals eclipse the positive ones.

It is said that peer pressure has some notable advantages. Initially, peer pressure can play a significant role in personal growth and motivation among young people. When surrounded by peers who excel academically, athletically, or artistically, the younger generation may be inspired to strive for greater achievements. For instance, in school, students may observe talented peers excelling in critical thinking and public speaking, which can motivate them to improve their skills, broaden their horizons, and ultimately become well-rounded individuals. Moreover, this can create a positive competitive environment in one’s organization, leading to the development of new skills and the growth of the group.

Despite these attractions, several drawbacks do exist. Firstly, it may create negative pressure on individuals. This means that excessive peer pressure is the major cause of stress, anxiety, and low self-esteem in the younger generation, as it builds this feeling that they are not able to match the expectations of their peers. For example, in extreme cases, for people with weak mental determination, this can lead to depression and decrease the quality of work and life. Therefore, peer pressure could make people want to follow bad behaviors to gain recognition and easily become vulnerable. Secondly, there can be a loss of personal identity. This is because they may feel compelled to adopt the attitudes, behaviors, and tastes of their peers, even if they conflict with their own values and beliefs. Thus, peer pressure stifles individuality and creativity, preventing young people from discovering their true selves and potential.

In conclusion, peer pressure sometimes becomes a powerful source of motivation for young generations to study harder and helps them improve social skills. However, the negative aspects outweigh the positives due to several cases where teenagers follow bad behaviors and cannot find their potential.
