Band 8+: More and more couples are deciding to be "child-free", to have no children, in other words. Some people claim that those couples reach this conclusion through entirely selfish reasons. While others think that they came to this decision through noble motives, such as concern about overpopulation and desire for independence. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

It is becoming increasingly common for the majority of couples not to have any children. While it is believed by some people that they make this decision purely out of their selfishness, others argue that it stems from other high moral principles, including concern about overpopulation and an ambition to gain personal independence. The choice to have a child has some tremendous ramifications, so I claim that people in relationships may have changeable reasons, depending on the couple, to remain childless.

On the one hand, some critics label child-free life as selfishness. Most couples are somehow reluctant, being affected by the people around them, to make this choice. In other words, they could be influenced by their peers, who might be having a hard time raising a child; they might be overly panicked by the idea that it would take significant obligations and sacrifices, including but not limited to disrupted sleep patterns and having to protect the child from any potential harm or dangers. Another such egocentric reason behind having no children is financial concerns. Parenting is an expensive job. People usually spend significant sums of resources on caring for the child. This includes clothing, education, and feeding, often varying depending on each country. In a nation like the USA, sending a single child to a college is alone 250,000 dollars in total, making potential parents feel that they cannot afford such substantial financial commitments.

However, some people might justify deciding against having children by suggesting a number of noble, ethical, and practical motives. Initially, raising children could be an extra burden for the planet. There are still 8 billion people on the Earth, so adding more could mean more pollution, more deforestation to build cities, and reduced quality of life. Some environmentalist individuals might not want to choose to bear a child so that the current state of the planet can remain undisrupted. Furthermore, they can focus on their careers while in marriage. Some people assume that getting married means having a child, and it hinders their independence, believing that they could not continue their chosen career path. Nonetheless, these people want to live with their loved ones without the responsibility to have a kid, devoting most of their time, effort, and energy to a profession or to a job that they are passionate about. They might not be able to achieve progress as effectively if they had children. For example, this phenomenon can be widely seen in Japan, with most of their adults leading lives without any offspring and only prioritizing their work.

In conclusion, I think there is no single universal reason why they choose to forgo parenthood. It might be a deeply personal decision driven by their own concerns about monetary challenges and considerations, while it is possible that they choose this way of life considering the environment and their careers.
