This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the Cambridge IELTS 11 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 3 Test 2 question:
“How friendly are you with your neighbours? [Why/Why not?]”
Sample 1: Friendly
I would describe my relationship with my neighbours as cordial. We don’t engage in frequent social interactions, primarily due to our busy schedules. Yet, we always find time to exchange pleasantries whenever we bump into each other. The lack of consistent interaction doesn’t stem from any animosity, but rather from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Sample 2: Friendly
In terms of my rapport with my neighbours, I would describe it as quite close-knit. We have known each other for a substantial amount of time, which has allowed us to build a bond of trust and companionship. This familiarity makes our neighbourhood feel more secure and homely, which I appreciate.
Sample 3: Friendly
I can confidently say that I have an amicable relationship with my adjacent residents. This harmony is largely due to the mutual assistance we provide to each other. Whether it’s looking after each other’s homes during vacations, or lending a helping hand in an emergency, our interaction has sown seeds of trust and friendship.
Sample 4: Neutral
Honestly, I maintain a somewhat neutral rapport with my neighbours. As an introvert, I value my personal space and solitude, which often translates into limited interaction with those living nearby. However, this doesn’t imply any animosity, it’s just my preference for a quiet lifestyle.
Sample 5: Neutral
As a transient resident, my interaction with my neighbours is somewhat limited. For the most part, I’m pleasant with them and they reciprocate the sentiment. However, the transient nature of my stay doesn’t allow for a deep bond to develop; it’s more of a respectful acquaintance.
Sample 6: Neutral
In my neighbourhood, most residents, myself included, are engrossed in the classic 9-to-5 work routine. This daily grind leaves us with little time for extensive interactions. Our exchanges are therefore limited to friendly nods and brief chats. Despite the lack of depth in our relationships, a sense of community still persists.
Sample 7: Unfriendly
It’s quite unfortunate, but my relationship with my neighbours is rather tense, largely owing to several unresolved disputes. These disagreements range from issues regarding shared property boundaries to parking spaces. The escalating tension has unfortunately led to quite a hostile environment.
Sample 8: Unfriendly
Regrettably, I share a rather strained relationship with my neighbours due to the level of noise they often generate. Their fondness for loud music and late-night gatherings disrupts my peace and quiet, which I value highly. Despite having communicated my concerns, they haven’t shown much consideration.
Sample 9: Unfriendly
Regrettably, I don’t have a warm relationship with my neighbours. There was an incident in the past where misunderstandings led to a heated argument. Since then, we’ve maintained our distance, coexisting without much interaction. It’s not an ideal situation, but sometimes it’s better to avoid conflict.
Sample 10: It Depends
In my case, the level of friendliness with my immediate surroundings tends to swing based on the generation gap. I find it easier to mingle with neighbors who are close to my age group, as we share similar interests and life experiences. The camaraderie isn’t quite the same with folks from a different age bracket, but it’s not for lack of trying. We do interact, but the conversations are more around general topics.
