This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the Cambridge IELTS 12 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 3 Test 3 question:
“How do you decide which clothes to buy? [Why?]”
Sample 1
For me, the decision to acquire new attire is all about comfort and functionality. I tend to gravitate towards items that feel good on my skin and serve a practical purpose in my day-to-day life. I believe that fashion should never compromise comfort, hence my preference for breathable fabrics and easy-to-wear designs.
Sample 2
I have to admit, I’m quite a fashion enthusiast. I often compare the latest trends with my current wardrobe, and if there’s a gap, I’ll buy that missing piece. That doesn’t mean I’m a slave to trends, though. I still have to love the item, not just because it’s in style but because it suits my personality too.
Sample 3
Truth be told, I often find myself purchasing clothes inspired by influencers or celebrities I follow on social media. They have a knack for curating styles that I find appealing and trendy. If I see them wearing something that resonates with me, I am inclined to buy something similar. It’s a quick and convenient way to keep my wardrobe updated and stylish.
Sample 4
Ironically, most of my wardrobe purchases are spontaneous. I might be out for a coffee, spot a fabulous outfit in a shop window, and before I know it, I’ve bought it. To be honest, this method isn’t the most rational, but the thrill of an unplanned purchase can be irresistible!
Sample 5
As a conscious consumer, I often consider the environmental impact of my clothes. I aim to buy from brands that use sustainable materials and ethical production methods. It’s not always easy to find these, but I believe it’s a small step towards solving the huge problem of fast fashion.
Sample 6
My profession dictates a significant portion of my wardrobe. Since I work in a corporate environment, I tend to buy formal and semi-formal attire that projects a professional image. It’s crucial for me to look the part, as it helps me feel more confident and competent in my role.
Sample 7
I’m a bit of a bargain hunter when it comes to clothes shopping. I set a budget for myself and try not to exceed it. I’ve found that this not only keeps my finances in check but also makes me more selective and thoughtful about what I buy. Sure, I might miss out on some high-end designer pieces, but I’ve learned that you can still dress stylishly on a budget. It’s all about finding the right balance between price and quality.
Sample 8
The changing seasons and weather conditions play a significant role in my clothing choices. I opt for lightweight clothing during warmer months and heavier, more insulated pieces during colder periods. Moreover, I enjoy the opportunity to change up my wardrobe and experiment with different styles each season.
Sample 9
For me, dressing is all about confidence. I buy clothes that I believe enhance my best features and fit my body well. If I try on an outfit and it makes me feel self-assured and positive about my appearance, that’s the one I’ll buy. The color, pattern, or brand doesn’t matter as much as the confidence it instills in me.
Sample 10
When I need to purchase clothes, it’s often driven by a specific occasion. Be it a wedding, a job interview, or a formal event, I select my attire based on the requirements of that particular event. I believe that dressing appropriately for an occasion is a sign of respect and can also boost my confidence. It’s not just about looking good, but also about feeling comfortable and appropriate in that environment.
