This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the Cambridge IELTS 9 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 2 Test 4 question:
“How often do you ride a bicycle? [Why/Why not?]”
Sample 1: Regularly
Not a day goes by without me hopping on my bicycle. The reason for this is twofold: first, cycling is a brilliant way to stay fit. Second, it helps me reduce my carbon footprint. Nothing beats the feeling of wind in my hair as I zoom around, knowing I’m contributing to a healthier planet.
Sample 2: Regularly
I usually ride a bike quite regularly, essentially because it affords me a chance to bond with my cycling community. In fact, we have a small group that goes on an early morning cycling tour every day. It serves as a great stress reliever and it’s an incredible way to connect more deeply with friends and nature.
Sample 3: Regularly
I get on my bicycle quite frequently, I’d say around several times a week. It’s more of a leisurely pursuit for me. The feeling of riding at my own pace and capturing breathtaking views of my city truly ignites a sense of peace and contentment.
Sample 4: Moderately
Well, I wouldn’t say I’m an everyday rider, but I do love hopping onto my bicycle every weekend. It’s my favorite means of exploring the local parks and nature trails. Engaging with nature like this just offers a tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Sample 5: Moderately
For me, cycling falls under moderate frequency. Primarily, it complements my other fitness activities, adding variety to my otherwise gym-centric lifestyle. Plus, it’s a great change of pace from the monotonous repetitions of lifting weights.
Sample 6: Moderately
On average, I use my bicycle two or three times per week, mostly to get to work or run some errands. It’s an economical way to move around, especially considering the high fuel costs and public transportation fees. Still, the less-than-optimum weather conditions and road safety issues prevent me from bicycling daily.
Sample 7: Rarely
My usage of a bicycle is modest, probably around once per week. This is mainly due to living in a busy city where traveling by bicycle can be somewhat precarious due to the heavy traffic.
Sample 8: Rarely
Honestly, I hop on a bicycle infrequently, probably only a couple of times a month. The main reason is my avid interest in other forms of exercise like pilates and boxing, which I find more riveting. However, when I do take my bike for a spin, I appreciate the invigorating feel of the wind on my face.
Sample 9: Rarely
Regrettably, I don’t ride a bicycle all that often mainly because of my mediocre cycling abilities. I’ve tried to improve, but I’ve always found it tricky to maintain balance, which reduced my confidence drastically. Although on infrequent sunny days, I take out my old bicycle, mostly to breathe some fresh air in the countryside.
Sample 10: It Depends
Interestingly, my bicycle usage is predominantly seasonal. During summer, I ride it nearly every day, basking in the warmth and vitality that the season offers. Winter, on the other hand, perceives a significant decrease in my bicycling frequency due to the harsh weather conditions.
